Tricone Drilling Construction

Tricone Drilling is a mechanical drill bit located in the bottom of the well assembly. Tricone Drilling is mainly used for drilling into various formations from soft, medium to hard. They are particularly suitable for hard rock formations. These drills are very reliable in ever-changing rock conditions.

Ground tooth Tricone bits are used in soft rock formations. The protruding teeth are widely spaced to prevent clogging by material as they cut into the surface material. Tungsten carbide insert (TCI) triangular bits are used in medium to hard rock formations. These bits are designed with smaller teeth that are more closely aligned. Higher drilling speeds are achieved when the formation is hard and the TCI can withstand the heat generated by these conditions. Mud is pumped into the drill column and discharged through the tri-cone bit to keep the bit free of rock chips and to move these chips back to the surface.

Tricone Drilling can be made from diamond or other metals, but tungsten carbide is one of the most popular materials. Sintered tungsten carbide tools have high wear resistance and can withstand higher temperatures than standard HSS tools.
